The Garden Object Rescue Program · Melbourne

Garden clearance in Melbourne, with care.

Gardener & Son rescues weathered pots, statues, tools, stone and timber from landfill, giving garden objects their next life through our Heirloom collection and the gardens we design.

Garden objects belong in gardens.

Every year, an enormous volume of garden objects — pots, statues, vessels, tools, timber, stone — ends up in landfill because someone needed a shed emptied or an estate cleared and there was nowhere obvious for it to go. Most of it is still useful. Much of it is beautiful. Some of it is irreplaceable.

The Garden Object Rescue Program is our answer. We take in garden objects from across Melbourne and Victoria, sort what is worth saving, and find them their next life — in our Heirloom collection, in the gardens we design, or with people who will care for them.

Three moments we can help.

Clearing a garden

Garden and shed clearances.

When you're emptying a backyard, a shed, or a long-held collection of garden objects. We come, we look, we take what we can re-home.

After a loss

Estate clearances.

Sorting a garden after a parent or family member has passed is hard work. We handle it with care, take what is worth keeping, and ensure nothing significant ends up in landfill.

Downsizing

Moving on from a collection.

Sometimes a garden has more than its keeper needs. If you have objects you'd like to see find their next home, we'll take them and place them well.

What we collect.

We accept garden objects with character, age, patina, or craft. The rule of thumb is simple: if it has had a life in a garden and could have another, we'd like to see it.

We take

  • Garden ornaments and statues
  • Pots, vessels, planters — terracotta, stone, ceramic
  • Garden tools and implements
  • Outdoor furniture — timber, metal, stone
  • Stone, timber, and basalt salvage
  • Sheds and shed contents
  • Whole-yard and estate clearances

We don't take

  • Plants — these belong with our Plant Donation Program
  • Brick offcuts or general building waste
  • Synthetic, broken, or unsalvageable items

From your garden, into the next.

Objects find their next life.

What we take is cleaned, restored where useful, and rehomed through our Heirloom collection, into the gardens we design, or with collectors and gardeners who'll care for them. Nothing significant ends up in landfill.

Part of the wider practice.

The Garden Object Rescue Program feeds our Heirloom collection — the vintage and rescued garden objects we offer through our Mont Albert and Hawthorn studios. It also supports our garden design and installation work: a well-aged pot or a weathered statue often becomes the keystone of a new ecological garden. If you're interested in what we do with what we rescue, visit Heirloom or explore our gardens.
