What a garden needs in its first year is different from what it needs in its fifth.
Rather than maintaining a garden toward a fixed picture, we watch how it responds to rain, heat, shade, competition, growth and use — intervening where useful and allowing natural processes room where they are working.

Care is not
the same as control.
Tending might mean editing vigorous growth, making room around a young plant, replenishing organic matter, adjusting water, observing recruitment, retaining useful fallen material, introducing another layer of planting or simply deciding that nothing needs doing yet.
The aim isn't to keep the garden as it was.
It's to help it become what it can be.
The same eyes,

Each visit begins with what happened since the last one.
Over time, observations accumulate. We understand which plants are thriving, where water is moving, what is arriving, what is disappearing and how the garden is changing.
That continuity lets us respond to the garden we actually have, rather than repeatedly treating it as a list of maintenance jobs.

A garden develops
a memory.
Meaningful observations and changes can be recorded over time — building a history of the garden alongside the garden itself.
For gardens registered with Ecological Registry, that record can also contribute to a longer view of biodiversity, habitat and ecological change.

Tend is primarily available for gardens designed or built by Gardener & Son.
We also consider existing gardens where the approach is aligned — ecological, plant-led gardens where thoughtful observation and intervention matter more than keeping everything clipped into place.
